Highlights

Professional refractometer for measuring operating fluids of passenger cars, trucks and buses. It is designed to determine the freezing point of washer fluid, propylene glycol and ethylene glycol coolant. It also gives the range of electrolyte density. The kit includes a sampling pipette and a cleaning cloth. Everything is packed in a sturdy plastic box.

A refractometer is a device that allows you to determine the physical properties of a liquid by measuring the refractive index at the interface of the media.

This allows you to determine:
  • The battery charge level
  • The freezing point of liquids based on propylene glycol or ethanol
  • The freezing point of the washer fluid.


How to use:

Measurement of the liquid:
  • Draw up a small amount of liquid with a pipette.
  • Pick up the scattering plate and apply 2-3 drops of liquid to the prism of the instrument.
  • Lower the scattering plate so that it evenly spreads the test liquid over the prism surface. There should be no air bubbles that could distort the measurement.
  • Wait approximately 30 seconds for the liquid to reach instrument temperature, then look into the eyepiece with the diffuser plate towards the light source.
  • If the image in the eyepiece becomes blurry, adjust the focus by rotating the focus ring. The boundary between the dark and the light area will determine the properties of a given fluid as read on the appropriate scale.
  • If a battery electrolyte is tested, the reading should be made on the scale marked with the battery symbol. The result is given in kg / l, and the scale is additionally described with battery charge levels. If the limit falls in the area described as "GOOD", it means that the battery does not require charging; "FAIR" loading is not necessary yet, but may be required soon; "RECHARGE" - Battery needs recharging.
  • If a propylene glycol based fluid is tested, the freezing point can be read on the scale labeled "PROPYLENE".
  • If a fluid based on ethanol is tested, the freezing point may be read on the scale labeled "ETHYLENE".
  • When the windscreen washer fluid is tested, the freezing point may be read on the scale marked with the washer symbol.


Instrument calibration:

  • Note! Calibration should be performed at an ambient temperature of 20 ° C. Also, make sure that the instrument has reached the ambient temperature. Before each measurement, check the correctness of the measurement. To do this, use distilled water and measure as described above.
  • The boundary of the light and dark areas should coincide with the line marked "WATERLINE". If it is otherwise, it should be done by turning the calibration screw with the included screwdriver.
  • A properly calibrated instrument should enable measurements at an ambient temperature ranging from -10 degrees Celsius to +50 degrees Celsius.
